"You can make 'em laugh and you can make 'em cry, but it ain't worth a damn if you don't make 'em buy." The lesson that we can design creative and emotive material, but to never lose focus of what it is we are trying to achieve was one of the first things ingrained in me when studying advertising.
Good design should do more than just make it pretty. It needs to communicate. It needs to convey the personality, the voice, the right values to the right audience. Good design should be a part of the entire process and not an attempt to tidy-up at the end as though design could cut away all the loose ends. A thoughtful marketing and branding strategy includes design from the start.
